Equality and equity are often used interchangeably, but they are different concepts. While equality means treating everyone the same, equity recognizes that people start from different positions and allocates the resources needed for an equal outcome. In other words, equity aims to give everyone what they need to be successful, and it’s not about giving everyone the exact same thing. The IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme seeks to shift the focus from equality to equity, acknowledging that equal opportunities are no longer enough and can, in fact, be exclusionary. Equity-based solutions take into account the diverse lived experiences of individuals and communities, adapting services and policies accordingly. Women’s advancement also requires a shift from gender equality to gender equity. Equity is a long-term and sustainable solution that seeks to change systemic and structural barriers that get in the way of people’s ability to thrive.
